Basic Emotions AAC Activity

Basic Emotions AAC Activity

Description: It can be so difficult sometimes to figure out what’s going on with a child who has autism or other severe language impairments.  This simple emotions board can be a great way to help a child learn about his/her emotions and eventually be able to communicate about them.  To start, get this out when the child is not super upset.  We want them to learn it before they need to use it.  You can talk about the feelings on the board and practice making faces in a mirror to show those emotions.  If the child is not aware enough to be able to practice this with you, you can just pull it out at random times to show the child how he’s feeling in the moment.  For example, if he’s smiling, you can pull it out and point to “happy” and say “Happy.  You are happy”.  You can pull it out before snack time and point to “hungry” or pull it out while waiting in line at the drinking fountain and point to “thirsty”.  Help the child understand those feelings in a variety of situations.  Then, if the child is upset or something seems wrong, you can pull out this picture and ask the child to point to how he’s feeling.  Even better, you can leave it somewhere easily accessible so he can pull it out himself!  You can download our emotion board using the link below, or make your own!

Helping You Help Them

Our Mission

We all got into this field because we wanted to help.  But high caseloads, tons of paperwork, and not enough planning time leads to burn-out and stress.

The SLP Solution’s mission is to support you with tools, resources, and expert advice so that you can be there for the children who depend on you!

*** The SLP Solution is for informational and educational purposes only and does not provide medical or psychological advice.  We provide general resources but cannot tell you exactly what should be done for a specific client.  Every client is different and your clinical judgement should be used when making decisions about specific individuals.
