Word Retrieval Activities

Word Retrieval Activities

Description: Here are some quick activities you can do for children who are having word retrieval problems!  Choose a few activities that will make them think of words quickly.  The idea is that these types of word games will help them organize the language centers of their brain a bit better.  Here are a few to get you going (or you can download our worksheet pack below):

  • Fill-in-the-blank associations: “a pair of ___” or “peanut butter and ___”
  • Rapid naming from categories: “name as many vehicles as you can”
  • Provide a word from a definition: “A red and juicy fruit that is often made into juice or sauce.”
  • Listing items required to complete a task: “Name everything you need to brush your teeth”
  • Finish similes: “As sticky as a ____”
  • Providing antonyms and synonyms: “Provide an antonym and synonym for ‘happy'”

Helping You Help Them

Our Mission

We all got into this field because we wanted to help.  But high caseloads, tons of paperwork, and not enough planning time leads to burn-out and stress.

The SLP Solution’s mission is to support you with tools, resources, and expert advice so that you can be there for the children who depend on you!

*** The SLP Solution is for informational and educational purposes only and does not provide medical or psychological advice.  We provide general resources but cannot tell you exactly what should be done for a specific client.  Every client is different and your clinical judgement should be used when making decisions about specific individuals.
