Basic Vocabulary Categorization Activity
Description: One of the ways that we can work on expanding vocabulary in young children is by talking about categories. This will help the children learn to better organize words in their minds and understand how words are related. I like to start with some basic categories like vehicles, animals, food, clothing, furniture, etc. Show the child several pictures of items that are all from the same category. Start by having the child label the pictures. Next, talk about what those pictures all have in common. Keep practicing this until the child can label each picture and tell you the appropriate category. Do this with a few different categories. Next, you’ll cut these pictures apart and see if the child can sort them back into the correct categories.
